Easter Bunny III

From last April, "Easter Bunny III", 10" x 10" (my scanner only grabbed 10" x 9", but the missing sliver is a continuation of the darker ground and whiskers), acrylics on museum quality panel depicting a sweet lop eared rabbit. This painting is yours for $539 and proceeds from this sale will benefit bunny rescue at my local no-kill animal shelter. Inquiries may come directly to me . SOLD (thank you!) The pace of the week is carrying into my weekend. We have a lacrosse game and team dinner, a friends and family drumline performance and fundraiser, winter percussion State Championships, and a 3 day dance competition that starts in 2 hours. I'd best get moving! Enjoy your weekend! Thanks, as always, for following along with my artwork! Warmly, Kim   ksantini@turtledovedesigns.com

Colby, Painted Sketch

"Colby", a small painted sketch, done in acrylics on paper, private collection (THANK YOU!). Inquiries may come directly to me .  I did a handful of new sketches today, of which Colby is a shining example. Don't you love his goofy face? he's so chill, just hanging out, soaking up the sun.   I also did another reverse painting on plexi, and got it scanned and onto FineArtAmerica . I don't think that there's enough unicorn art in the world, do you?   Now I'm off to freeze my butt, err, cheer my butt off, at The Caped Crusader's lacrosse game. I'll be the one in the stands zipped into a heavy duty sleeping bag. And I'm packing a cowbell. Yeah, I'm that mom. Thanks, as always, for following along with my artwork! Warmly, Kim   ksantini@turtledovedesigns.com

Studio Happenings

Just a sampling of some recent creativity, clockwise from upper left, detail of "Charlie"s painted sketch, detail of a racehorse themed contour drawing, and detail of a journal page. Inquiries may come directly to me .  A couple days went by and I didn't get a chance to blog/email. I promise I'm not slacking!   I've been finishing up the 20 sketches sold in February (my goal was to have them done and shipped by the end of this month - I'm nearly there!), working on 36 new contour drawings (to be revealed at a local Kentucky Derby poster signing event next month), keeping abreast of my homework (remember Year of the Spark ?), communicating with my galleries about their Derby Day plans, keeping my desk clean (that means staying on top of paperwork and emails!), continued research about painting on copper (I got my copper panel last week), prepping (6) 16"x20" underpaintings for my Stanka Kordic workshop (I am giddy with antic

Chestnut, Finished

"Chestnut" 24" x 12", acrylics on a museum quality panel, depicting a chestnut mare with a little bit of flash. And some glare on the far right - my apologies - with the glossy ground, this is a very difficult piece to photograph, and I'll have to get her done professionally! This painting can be yours for $1499, which includes s&h inside the US. There's a mess of in process photos  here, including detail shots. Inquiries may come directly to me .  This piece is my new all time favorite. Here's why. The color is a bit flatter in this photograph than it is in person. This painting is vibrant and delicious! That dark ground? It's really a sea of blue to green. And those pinks in her shoulder? I teared up a little over them. Yeah, I'm a color geek. The movement is true. I can feel her stepping forward, I can see the sun glistening off her muscles, and I can hear her feet hit the ground. The brushwork looks tigh

Smitty, A Painted Sketch

"Smitty," a painted sketch, roughly 5" x 8" on a 9" x 12" mixed media paper, acrylics, private collection (THANK YOU!). As always, inquires may always come directly  to me .  Got lots more accomplished on The Road to the Kentucky Derby today! Finalizing details with a couple of my galleries (they are throwing Derby shindigs!), working on tasks related to local poster signings and Derby events that I'm a part of, did a little jewelry shopping for Derby day, worked a smidge on my travel itinerary, made appointments for car, hair and nails, and managed to finish two sketches.   Not bad given that Wednesdays are my short days in the studio! Every Wednesday I have a late breakfast with The Caped Crusader before driving him into school, and then just 4 hours later I collect The Princess directly from her school for a volunteer gig. I love that my job allows me to be a hands on Mom.   Thanks, as always, for followi

Harold, Painted Sketch

"Harold," a painted sketch, roughly 5-1/2" x 6-1/2" centered on a 9" x 12" mixed media paper, acrylics, private collection (THANK YOU!). As always, inquires may always come directly  to me .  Yesterday I made a list of all the things that needed to happen before The Kentucky Derby. It was a daunting list, and it scares me. But it's also nice to have everything identified that needs to happen.   Things like finding shoes, creating new marketing materials, doing a large scale mailing, shipping fresh inventory to my galleries, freshening up my website, building a slideshow presentation of my experience, finalizing various poster signing/appearance details, picking up my Derby dress from the seamstress, finishing up the sketches sold last month, creating more racing scene contours, taking care of final details on the new painting process video, connect with a couple mentors to mentally prepare for the week, completing two big piec

Chestnut, In Process

"Chestnut" 24" x 12", acrylics on a museum quality panel, depicting a chestnut mare with a little bit of flash. This painting can be yours for $1499, which includes s&h inside the US. There's a mess of in process photos   here, including some detail shots. Inquires may come directly to me .  You may have noticed I'm sharing more in process paintings lately. This is because I have made a conscious choice to work in a larger scale, and that means I can't always finish a painting in one day. This is an important piece of my growth as an artist, but I know it's not nearly as fun to see unfinished works all the time, too. Please bear with me as I work through some kinks and figure out the best way to handle this. Would you rather I posted less frequently, but only shared completed works? or do you prefer the regular updates, even if some of the paintings are unresolved? Thanks for weighing in! And thanks, as alwa

The King

"The King (Elvis)," 6" x 8", acrylics on a Raymar panel, a portrait of none other than The King Himself, still life done from a vintage doll (stamped "1984 E.P.E" on the back!), $329 to the first one raising their hand. Inquires may come directly to me . In process pics are here .  Today started with a little extra sleep (can never go wrong with that!), then a private art lesson with one of my favorite young ladies, then some loud music and dancing solo at my easel. Now I'm off to deliver a pre-lacrosse practice snack to one kid, collect another from a volunteering gig, and get in a powerwalk all before the sun sets. Hope your day has been just as excellent! Thank you, thank you very much!  Happy Weekend, Kim   ksantini@turtledovedesigns.com

Spring, in Process

"Spring," 9" x 30", mixed media, reverse painted, on museum ULVS plexiglass. This piece will go to the first one asking nicely for $699. As always, inquires may always come directly to me . SOLD (TY VERY MUCH!) I started painting on plexiglass last month, and after a little adjustment (one has to assemble their painting in reverse, from tiny marks to bigger ones), fell totally in love with the process. Here is my latest, not quite finished, with nods to Van Gogh, Klimt and Matisse, along with other personal imagery and symbols. It began innocently enough as a doodle on the back of someone's homework, started while breakfasting with The Princess one morning. She challenged me to run with the idea (giant daffodils chasing a rabbit), and run I did! Close up details of the progression are here and a few more here . Thanks, as always, for following along with my artwork! Warmly, Kim   ksantini@turtledovedesigns.com

Harry, Painted Sketch

"Harry," a painted sketch, roughly 4" x 5" centered on a 9" x 12" mixed media paper, acrylics, private collection (THANK YOU!). As always, inquires may always come directly  to me .  As if it's not enough pressure, having to paint something pretty much every day AND share it via my email blast and blog, tomorrow I have raised the bar on myself. Yes, I am a glutton for punishment. I will be joined in the studio by a videographer. Her assignment? To film the creation, start to finish, of a painting. God I hope I sleep tonite. Nobody wants to see me with major bags under my eyes, all crabbing out at the easel, because I can't make the paint go where it's supposed to. Let's hope things don't play out that way! Thanks, as always, for following along with my artwork! Warmly, Kim   ksantini@turtledovedesigns.com

Jack

"Jack," a painted sketch, roughly 5" x 8" centered on a 9" x 12" mixed media paper, acrylics, private collection (THANK YOU!). As always, inquires may always come directly  to me .  What's a Painted Sketch? I offer these once a year or so, in limited quantities. The price point is lower than one of my commissioned panels, but honestly they take nearly as much work, with the same prep and lead in tasks and the larger investment of time mounting, wrapping and shipping. But I love the freedom that comes with being able to sit and draw and really connect with my materials. And I know many in my collector base appreciate the opportunity to get an original work of art at a perfect price for gift giving.   I start with a non flash, copyright free photo, measure out a small space in the center of my page, and start a contour drawing in pencil (with panels, I jump straight to the paint). A box/frame gets added around the face, and

Poofus (Best Dog Name EVER!)

"Poofus," a contour doodle, 9" x 12", ink and paint on bristol board, private collection (THANK YOU!). As always, inquires may always come directly  to me .  Another busy day, but this one I anticipated, which somehow makes things better! Yoga-ed, grocered, lunched with The Man Child, ran an errand for The Caped Crusader and helped The Princess pack and ready for this weekend's dance competition. I'd love to lay my head down now, like Poofus, and take a quick nap. Thanks, as always, for following along with my artwork! Enjoy your weekend, warmly, Kim   ksantini@turtledovedesigns.com

Racehorse I, Contour Drawing

"Racehorse I," a contour drawing, roughly 5" x 9", ballpoint pen on paper, available for $75, including s&h inside the US. As always, inquires may always come directly  to me . SOLD (TY!). A similar styled piece, with paint added, is available via auction benefitting  the Equis Gallery Relocation Fund  is also available -  learn more and bid here .  It seems as though every day this week has taken an unexpected turn or been consumed with meetings, phone calls and various appointments. I miss my quiet days in the studio with my paints. But that doesn't mean I'm not creating! It used to be that I refused to touch any art supplies if I didn't have 3-4 hours to work uninterrupted. Three kids and a busy household taught me that no amount of meticulous planning or patient waiting would ever guarantee that. Compromising hurt my pride for a little - but, in the long run, it enabled me to embrace the moments I do have t

Silly Old Dog, pARTy-ing it Up!!

"Silly Old Dog," 11" x 14", acrylics on panel, depicting Gracie, our neighbor's lab mix. This painting is done in Golden acrylics on an Ampersand gessobord and can be yours for $599, including s&h within the contiguous US. In process photos are on the Studio FB page . pARTy details are here . Inquires may come directly to me .  Let's Make a Habit of pARTy-ing Zevon's pARTy was well attended  (and is still ongoing until the end of this month!). I got so many great compliments about the opportunity, that I decided to host another! If you are new to the concept, it's simple - someone shares the rights to one of their photographs, and challenges creatives to make artwork inspired by the photo. All of the work is then displayed collectively, for the whole world to see the variety of interpretations and possibilities resulting from the one image. I've chosen my neighbor's dog Gracie as our next pARTy guest. The

Silly Old Girl, In Process

"Silly Old Girl" 11" x 14", acrylics on a museum quality panel, depicting a my neighbor's sweet old girl, Gracie May. This painting can be yours for $599, which includes s&h inside the US. And in case you didn't see them, in process photos are here  . Inquires may come directly to me .  'll admit it, I spent a good amount of this morning sitting on the couch, mesmerized by the falling snow. Not sure it it was because of it's insane beauty, or because I couldn't believe it's STILL snowing, but it is what it is, and i will own that. Meanwhile, later in the day, after catching up on email (which may or may not have been done in pajamas, via my ipad, from the couch, while the snow fell), I started this new piece, inspired by Gracie, a muse of 10+ years. You see, after having coffee and other goodies yesterday morning at her house, she played this coy game when I got up to leave. She didn't want to have to get up

Tabby Kit

"Tabby Kit," 5" x 7", acrylics on a museum quality panel, depicting a tiny little orange striped guy from Morgue File . This painting can be yours for $289, which includes s&h inside the US. And in case you didn't see it, a little doodle of him is also available for sale here . Inquires may come directly to me .  Although it certainly doesn't FEEL like spring here (snow and ice and wind chills, brr!), I can tell that spring is coming. The mercury is rising a wee bit each day and the days are getting longer and brighter. Over the weekend we drove with the moonroof open just to feel the sun's meager and oh-so-very-welcome warmth (although the heat in the car was cranked, too, in the interest of full disclosure!). I wanted to work with spring-like colors today, and this little guy was still on my mind , so I grabbed a small panel and got to work. Of course, I also have Poppy to finish and some changes to make to another po
